In 1994 the management boards of the Russian Acoustical Society (RAS) and the Acoustical Society of America (ASA) came to an agreement about the targeted stipends for support of Russian students research in acoustics, being the American side undertook the financing of the project. Shortly after the Agreement moved to its practical phase, the first half dozen of grant holders from different scientific centers of Russia were selected as winners of the competition in 1995. This agreement arose due to initiative of the President of ASA Technical Committee for Support for the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and Eastern European Acoustics (CIS/EU) Dr. Peter Mikhalevsky and RAS President Prof. Nikolai Dubrovsky.
The organizers emphasized the works carried out in different branches of acoustics. So, there are nominees working in ocean and medical acoustics, physical acoustics and nonlinear waves interaction, etc. Awarded students have published results of their work in scientific journals and conference proceedings.
It's hard to overestimate the very idea of such a competition. It has rather stimulating effect on young specialist scholarship in acoustics. The notable financial support makes it possible for outstanding students to focus their efforts on the research, which is not so easy in this, difficult time for Russian science.
Getting an award from the most influential acoustic community in the world means acknowledgement of student's contribution in acoustics as well as high level of education of the Russian young specialists - acousticians.
Information about this project, names of nominees and awardees has been regularly publicized on the pages of the Bulletin of the Russian Acoustical Society.
The similar program is implemented for the East European Acoustical Association (EEAA).
